Rescue Me ID: 14-06-06-00430Cody (male)

Australian Shepherd    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cody has been my dog since 2006 when he was just a puppy. This December he will be 8 years old and he still has all the energy that he did when he was younger. He's always lived an active lifestyle and loves to run, to play fetch (he actually bring the ball back now) and to be wherever you are outdoors. When he was younger there was a period of time when I would leave for work in the morning and a guy from the neighborhood would come up to the house (Cody was fenced in the backyard) and throw stick and rocks at him. He even shot him once with a BB gun. As soon as I found out what was happening I put an end to it but, ever since that ... (Read More)point, Cody has been a more protective (of me) and aggressive (towards some people) animal. He is super loyal and very protective... not necessarily bad qualities for a dog but they don't work well living in a neighborhood with kids who love to run up to him very quickly and try to pet him. I managed for a long time by being very careful of who he was around and by warning people not to approach him quickly. In parks he normally just wants to stay by my side and isn't very interested in other people or animals... he just doesn't want people running up and trying to pet him. I hate to put him up for adoption but I've come to the point where I don't have any other real choice. I recently got married and his protection of me means that he bites at my lovely wife. When I am not around he is ok with her but as soon as I return he goes back into protection mode. He has been living at my parent's house and has been doing well there. They just can't take care of him anymore. He typically does well with other people... as long as I'm not around. When I am around he goes back into protection mode. I'm hoping that a change of scenery and not being around me will be what he needs. He loves to hike and loves to have a task to do. He's never been a working dog but does do very well when he fells like he has a task to do. He's super smart and very sweet with people he likes and it breaks my heart to give him up for adoption but I feel like this is the best option for him to live a good and happy life. (Less)
