Animal ID: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/2952Susi (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Susi says she has some very important criteria for her adopters...and it doesn't seem like these are negotiable in her mind: (1) They must throw a ball for her daily. She looks forward to this every day in her foster home. She'll run like the wind to chase a tennis ball! (2) They must be willing to work with a trainer for obedience and possibily agility training. Susi needs a job to do. She's delighted to learn and that's when she shines...when she thinks she's mastered something and she's pleasing her human by doing the task. Without regular mental and physical stimulation, she gets stressed. Don't worry, she's medium energy. (3) ... (Read More)They must be willing to be very patient with her. Due to her past emotional and physical trauma (see below for details), Susi says she needs patience and love...lots and lots of love...including but not limited to: belly rubs, petting, leaning against you, and lots of emotional happiness from her humans. (4) They must love sloppy doggie kisses. We know for sure this is absolutely 100% non-negotiable! (5) They must be the kind of people who do not stress easily. She picks up on your emotions and if she's already stressed, then you getting upset makes it worse for her. (6) They must be willing to use LOTS of verbal praise. [We think she was yelled at a lot.] (7) They must provide a basket full of toys for her to chew on. All kinds of toys please! (8) They must provide a large crate with comfy bedding. (9) They must be adult humans with a huge fenced yard [at least 4 feet high]. (10) They must choose her as their one and only pet. (11) They must not give up on her, ever. If they commit, they must commit to her for life. Susi will reward you with tail wags and lots of kisses if you can meet her criteria! BIO FROM HER FOSTER MOM: Susi has had a rough life and we're looking for someone who can commit to her forever. She was shot (may have more shotgun pellets in her), had her foot caught in a trap (left untreated/healed deformed), and at a young age her owner decided he didn't want her any more and was going to shoot her to euthanize her (where she lived this is actually legal!). She was then rescued, vetted and adopted, but was returned months later when her owners were moving. Let down by humans again! She is now back in foster care with three adult humans and several other dogs of varying sizes. If the dogs get too excited, Susi gets stressed by it and doesn't know what to do. If they're calm, then she'll just chill out and hang out with them. But when they're hyper, I've had to teach her to go into her crate when she can't handle it, which she is beginning to do. At this point, I feel Susi would be happiest as an only pet so she doesn't have to worry if the other dogs are excited because they're happy or they're going to possibly attack her. (She may have had that happen in the past, we can't be sure since we don't have much of a history on her.) She needs someone who will understand her and love her and show her what it's like to be truly accepted. Susi would do best in an adults-only home with a huge fenced yard. She cannot live with cats (wants to chase them). She is mostly housebroken (does best with crate training) and sleeps in her crate at night. Due to her stressful past, we do not recommend her for a home with children. If you're looking to adopt a dog that really needs a home, and don't expect perfection, please submit an application if you'd like to show Susi what forever means.     Australian Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in Pennsylvania if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Shepherd, or Aussie, is a playful breed that provides excellent companionship to active children. Aussies are smart, trainable, protective, and eager to please. lnteresting Australian Shepherd Trivia Low-Cost Pennsylvania Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Shepherds are not Australian; they were developed in the United States for herding livestock on American ranches. Australian Shepherds are descended from Spanish dogs that were used for herding Merino sheep. Aussies can be trained to perform tricks. Some Australian Shepherds are prized for their beautiful merle coloring, but the gene that causes this coloring also results in deafness or blindness.
