Rescue Me ID: 14-04-11-00079Leilani (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Leilani (heavenly flower) is mama to Kalea (bright), Koa (warrior), Hilo (new moon), Moku (island), and Kumu (teacher) ... our Hawaiian litter! Pups were born around the beginning of February. They have had their first shots and deworming and are available by appointment. Leilani has been spayed, dewormed, and received her vaccinations. She is ready for her furever home! Mama Leilani is such a sweetheart! Everyone is falling in love with her. She will crawl in your lap and stick by your side. Such a great dog. She is 42 lbs but should weigh around 50-55 at her ideal weight. The vet has estimated that she is around 18 months old. She is ... (Read More)very gentle and shows no aggression or resource guarding at all. Gets along with dogs and cats, men, women and children. She can show some hesitation when approached by a strange adult, but quickly warms up. She is great in the house, has not chewed anything or had any potty accidents in her foster home. She does 'dribble' sometimes when she is nervous, but this may resolve as her body heals from having babies. She likes to play with her rope toy and tennis ball, and likes to fetch. She is quiet but will bark when someone comes into the house or if she hears a noise that makes her nervous. She wants to be by your side all day long and would probably be sad if she were left alone for long hours. She would make a great dog for a family with young children, a parent who stays home, and a fenced back yard to play fetch in. The perfect dog to grow up with! She travels well in the car and walks well on leash, although she is not yet trained to heel. She has dark freckles on her nose, and short expressive ears. She is definitely a shepherd mix and we think possibly some aussie although she does not seem to have any 'herding' instincts. Whatever her breed mix, this is one special dog. We need fosters in the Raleigh/Cary/Wake Forest (and surrounding) areas. www.love petfinder.com spaycatdog@embarqmail.com Join us on facebook! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-04-08-00220Patches (male)

Australian Shepherd    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We absolutely love our dog, but we can't take our dog to our new place. He's a great dog for the right people. Please read this entire description. We really want him to have someone who can love and handle him. He needs someone that understands that although he is beautiful that he is an Aussie first which means that he is a high energy dog who is incredibly smart. (He seems to respond more favorably to Male caretakers, although he has lived with our family of four women for the past 8 years. The girls were 11, 12, and 13 when we first got him. He has actually lived with another dog (a Standard Poodle, that also happens to be available) for ... (Read More)the past 2 years, and he has handled all of that dog's acts of aggression well as he seems to pay them no mind. Patches loves sitting in the sun, but we keep him inside. Although he is not an outside dog he loves to run whether that's a back yard or a farm (we always joked that he just needed a few sheep to herd, and he would have been fine) or you taking him out to a park or on a hike, or something like that. We've had him all but six months of his life. In that time we've discovered that he loves car rides (but the window can't be open very far or he tries to jump out), and he loves attention and belly rubs he is fine to walk with or bike with or run with, as long as he's far from other dogs (at which point he starts barking and jumping up); He always looks like he's smiling, and he likes to curl up by your feet. Patches does wonderful if he's properly introduced to other dogs and people, but surprises don't go well (crossing paths with another dog when we are taking him for a walk, or someone just so happening to come out of their house, or a cat crossing by the patio door). He does bark at any and everything, and has an extreme hatred of lawnmowers because he tries to eat them. He is temperamental so we don't let children pet him. He barks and jumps up when he sees other dogs, although when he gets to them, he interacts well with them (We've taken him to a dog park and have also had him interact with a female Aussie with no problems) but in the meantime he barks and jumps up. Yes, he's been to some obedience training classes, but it didn't work quite the way we had hoped. He would have been a great agility dog. Did we mention that he's smart? He's been known to get out of crates. So he could be related to Harry Houdini, who knows? We're telling you all of this stuff not to highlight his issues, but because he's a great dog that deserves a great family. He loves lakes, peanut butter, and a particular rope toy%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD|and we love him. So, if you think you're the one for him, please treat him well. He deserves a wonderful forever home. Animal ID: 156909851Elliott (male)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Six years ago my wife and I rescued Elliott as a puppy from a local pound. We love the dog! He is super intelligent, knows tons of tricks, walks great on a leash, loves to play and ride in the car. Unfortunately, we now have two small children and they make Elliott super anxious. He has never bitten but he is very verbal when my toddler is near. We need to find a good home for him. He would be a great dog for a family with teen age children or for empty nesters. We took him herding once and he took to it immediately. I used to be an Army Chaplain and Elliott was my wife's companion while I was deployed to Afghanistan. It is ... (Read More)breaking our heart to let him go, but we need to do what is best for him and the family. We are located in Wilmington, NC. (Less)

Australian Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in North Carolina if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Shepherd, or Aussie, is a playful breed that provides excellent companionship to active children. Aussies are smart, trainable, protective, and eager to please. lnteresting Australian Shepherd Trivia Low-Cost North Carolina Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Shepherds are not Australian; they were developed in the United States for herding livestock on American ranches. Australian Shepherds are descended from Spanish dogs that were used for herding Merino sheep. Aussies can be trained to perform tricks. Some Australian Shepherds are prized for their beautiful merle coloring, but the gene that causes this coloring also results in deafness or blindness.
