Rescue Me ID: 15-09-12-00114Harley (male)

Australian Shepherd    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Harley is an amazing purebred Australian shepherd Blue Merle. He was adopted from a shelter at 16 months from an abusive home. He is a working dog/herder and he should only be considered for adoption by someone who knows the breed, personality and appreciates how intelligent Aussies truly are. Harley has been loved by our family for 5 years and it pains me to even consider finding him a new home. I am only dong this to make HIM happy. Because he is a herding dog, he feels the need to herd. This has become a problem in the last year because our family has gained several grandchildren. While he's wonderful and loving to children, he's ... (Read More)very protective over babies and we love to see him watch over them so diligently, but he feels the need to herd them as toddlers. He's doing his 'job' without realizing he can hurt them while protecting them. So we've had to keep him away from the babies who can walk. Which is sad. As a grandmother, I will be having my grandchildren over more and more. I can't change his instincts, so we've come to the decision that for him to be happiest and enjoy his life fully, We must let him go to a loving home, more suitable to live without restrictions. He gets along with everyone, even our Bengal cat. They're buddies.... He hates thunder and isn't a fan of water or cars, but will tolerate them. He carries a blanket when he's excited to protect you. Since he's a herder, herding dogs are known to 'cattle pinch' he gets his blanket instead. Lol he's so intelligent! He knows at least 200+ words and commands. He jumps for frisbee a and tennis balls (his favorites) he loves to run free and stays within the property line (we have 2 1/2 acres) but loves being taken for long walks even more.... Please don't consider adoption unless you have a large property, the time and love to give to him that he deserves.... %BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD (Less)

lnteresting Australian Shepherd Trivia Low-Cost New Jersey Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Shepherds are not Australian; they were developed in the United States for herding livestock on American ranches. Aussies can be trained to perform tricks. Aussies are often used by police for narcotics detection. Some Australian Shepherds are prized for their beautiful merle coloring, but the gene that causes this coloring also results in deafness or blindness.
