Rescue Me ID: 15-02-06-00192LUNA (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Not Good with Cats
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

DOB 6/30/13 Luna is a beautiful Aussie mix with one blue and one brown eye but takes after the beagle side of her family with her small stature. Luna was left at a vets office in Alabama and her family never returned. They had just adopted her several months earlier and then abandoned her. When the vet called the family said they could no longer keep her but did not want her going back to the shelter in AL because she was such a sweet girl. Australian Shepherds are demanding of time and attention and want to be with you constantly; this trait is one of many that make them a wonderful family pet but can also pose a challenge for 1st time ... (Read More)Aussie mix owner. Her foster mom has this to say about her: 'Luna has the brains of an Aussie and the energy of a beagle; she sits, walks well on leash, rides in a car and lays down on command. However, she has selective hearing so a fenced yard would work best for her. She is great with other dogs and would do best in a home with another K-9 companion. Australian Shepherds need a great deal of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Herding, advanced obedience, agility, jogging or biking, chasing balls, and playing Frisbee are constructive outlets for their enthusiasm. Luna loves long walks and would make a great jogging partner. Luna does not do well with cats or other small animals as her instinct is to chase them. She would also do best in a home with teenage children as Aussies have a tendency to herd smaller children. She is housebroken knows basic commands and will make someone a great companion. She's great in a crate and rarely makes a peep until it's time to come out. If you have an active family and are looking for a companion to go on your journeys - Luna may just be the girl for you! Standard adoption fee is $295 and includes spay/neuter at our participating vets, immunizations/shots up to the point of adoption, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Please email Kathy for an application at (Less)

DOB 12/12/14 Aussie / Catahoula Mix puppy abandoned with all of the siblings at a high kill shelter in Alabama. Yes, these are some of the cutest puppies we have ever seen. We estimate that they are Aussie / Catahoula mix. If this breed guess is accurate, they have a strong herding instinct, which will require children 10 and older. As with all puppies they will need to continue puppy training, socialization and require daily mental and physical activities. In return, you will have a wonderful, loyal and happy family member. A fenced in yard and previous puppy experience is a MUST. We MUST have an approved application on file prior ... (Read More)to a meet and greet and your entire family must be present during the meet and greet. Puppies have special and require a home where there will be someone available to care for, socialize, and train them during the day. If your family is away from the home for several hours at a time, please consider adopting a 'teen' or adult dog. Standard adoption fee is $295 and includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, up-to-date on shots, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. Rescue Me ID: 15-01-18-00472Bob (male)

Australian Shepherd    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bob is typical of his breed, in that he's a bright, high-energy, loving dog. He is well trained using a pinch collar to heel, sit, stay, leave it, drop it, stop, etc. Sadly, he has had trouble getting along with our infant son -- having nipped him a half dozen times. Bob would excel in a home without infants, and with active people who like long walks and can take him to the dog park often. He gets along well with other dogs (he lived for several years with a dachshund-beagle mix). He has never lived with a cat, but has gotten along fine with them during visits. He does have chronic renal failure, which we are successfully controlling with ... (Read More)prescription dog food and medications. After a medical scare last year, Bob is back to being the playful, energetic dog he's always been. (Less)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This cute pup is a shelter favorite. We're not sure what he was crossed with, but his sister looked more pitbull. The natural docked tail suggests some aussie, perhaps? Whatever he is, he is cute and sweet, good with other dogs, cats, kids and adults. The adoption fee is $50 for dogs and includes vaccination (one shot of 5 way for adult dogs and two shots of 5 way two weeks apart for puppies as well as deworming) as well as microchipping, which is now mandatory by state law. On dogs we have spayed/neutered, we ask for the spay/neuter fee to be covered as well. We get a shelter rate for spay/neuter, so our rates are $55-70 for male dogs ... The Australian Shepherd, or Aussie, is a playful breed that provides excellent companionship to active children. Aussies are smart, trainable, protective, and eager to please. lnteresting Australian Shepherd Trivia Low-Cost Illinois Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Shepherds are not Australian; they were developed in the United States for herding livestock on American ranches. Australian Shepherds are descended from Spanish dogs that were used for herding Merino sheep. Some Australian Shepherds are prized for their beautiful merle coloring, but the gene that causes this coloring also results in deafness or blindness.
