Meet Angel. This sweet love showed up at a kind woman's house one night in terrible condition. She took her to the shelter in hopes of an owner showing up-perhaps she had been missing a long time? You just never know. Well, no owner showed up so she was in need of rescue who would help to restore her faith! She was so sad, very shy, and had a horrible skin condition. Angel is around 9 or 10 years old and weighs around 50 lbs. She is GORGEOUS! The fur on her back end is completely gone but in time will reappear because her life is now looking up! Animal ID: 0945Billie (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Billie is an incredibly sweet 4-year old 45-lb Australian Shepherd Mix (perhaps with border collie). She bonds quickly, and appears to have had some training in her previous home. Billie is very much a velcro dog, who loves to be around her people. She loves pets and is fast to roll over on her back to ask for belly rubs. When you are sitting she will also approach you and rest her head on your lap for more pets. Billie has a calm energy, and has been great about sleeping through the night. However, when it's time for a walk she is very enthusiastic and eager to sniff and explore. When walking on a leash, Billie will initially pull, but ... (Read More)calms down once you have been walking for a few minutes. She would benefit from additional leash training, but I believe she will learn quickly and train easily, as she is incredibly smart, eager to please, and is treat motivated. Billie is housebroken and has not had any accidents. She has not exhibited any destructive behavior and has not attempted to get up on any furniture. Billie has been great at meeting dogs at the park. She hasn't showed much interest in playing yet, but will approach other dogs (small and large) with tail wags. She will not initiate barking at other dogs, but if another dog barks at her, she will join in with tail wags. When in the home with another dog, Billie does appear to be a bit possessive, and will give out a warning growl if she doesn't feel like sharing her person. However, she is very submissive and may be able to live with another dog given the proper introduction. When encountering cats on the street, Billie will run up to them, but stops short a few feet, not knowing what to actually do with them. Billie has a healthy appetite and could stand to gain a bit of weight. She doesn't appear to guard resources and does not exhibit any food aggression. She is very treat motivated and will happily occupy herself by chewing on a bone or licking clean a peanut butter stuffed Kong. Billie is generally very quiet, but we have discovered that she will bark at motorcycles and bicyclists (mostly while she is in the car, on walks she doesn't seem to notice them). In general she is okay in the car, it doesn't seem to be her favorite place to be, but she will settle down after a while. Billie does seem to exhibit some herding tendencies. When taken to an area with horses, she did attempt to stalk and herd them. She also does get a bit mouthy while playing (although she will never bite down or nip). For this reason, I think Billie will do best in a home without children. Billie will benefit from a stable, patient home that understands her breed and will be accepting of her sensitive nature. Once she feels secure, I have no doubt that Billie will make an excellent companion for years to come! Rescue Me ID: 16-08-10-00587Astro (male)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Astro is a gorgeous, neutered 15-18 month old, 51 lb. cattle dog, with a bit of Aussie shepherd. He has excellent conformation, and his coat markings are a work of modern art. Astro is an outgoing and curious boy, with a moderate energy level. He is great when meeting all adults, children, farm animals, horses and other dogs. He will chase cats that run, but we think that he could live with cats, if introductions are slow and managed. More than anything, Astro wants to find his own person to bond closely with and to be with whenever he can. While he is a very alert, observant and inquisitive cattle dog, he is also easy going, and loves ... (Read More)sitting at his person's feet or placing his head in his human's lap for petting and close personal time. His favorite time of the day is snuggle time in the bed, if you are okay with that. He shows affection with nuzzling and very sweet, gentle puppy chews. Our boy meets other dogs in a very curious, friendly, relaxed way, with tail wags. He adores playing with other dogs. However, in a multi-dog household, it must be made clear to him that he must learn to share his person. For this reason, Astro will need a person who is experienced with this breed and who will be a clear leader to him. If not, Astro will try to make decisions and run the household for you. Astro isn't very interested in toys or treats. His rewards are interacting with people and other dogs. If another dog is not friendly or snaps at him, he will jump back or run. He may also stand a few feet away and bark at them several times to let them know that they weren't nice to him. If a dog is truly threatening, he will avoid them. Astro is a mostly a very quiet boy, but he may bark at passing bicycles. He will bark when crated initially, but settles in nicely. It is clear to us that Astro is one of the best examples of a cattle dog. He is a thinking dog with brilliant intelligence and the ability to puzzle through situations. He has such a velcro nature, that the people who found and fostered him never had him on leash. He would follow them everywhere and wait for them. Astro very much wants to please, but also has a mind of his own, with a sense of right and wrong and will let you know what he thinks. He is as close as you can get to a human child in a dog's body. One thing - Astro is nearly totally deaf. He has learned some hand signals and is very eager to learn more. It is such a shame that this amazing boy, with so much heart, personality, love, brains and a great temperament, was never taught anything before he was found stray. Astro is a quick learner, and now starting to learn basic commands, manners and boundaries. He redirects very easily, with a quick hand signal for 'No' and he will stop any inappropriate action. After being redirected 2-3 times, he will stop any further attempts. For several reasons, we believe that Astro was mostly an outside dog. He loves hanging out outside or inside, as long as he is with his person. Astro will walk by your side without a leash. He is just beginning to learn how to walk on leash, and will sometimes pull for several minutes, in excited anticipation of an adventure. While he seems house trained, our fosters are taking him out frequently as a reminder to go outside. Astro needs to be restrained when riding in a car. He wants to lay beside you or place his head on your lap as you drive. In summary, as a cattle dog, Astro's personality is one of the finest and truest examples of the brains and heart of the Australian cattle dog breed. Our boy has a lot of love, and bonds as fast as super glue. He needs some work to catch up on training he should have received as a puppy. We are seeking adopter(s) who can see the incredible potential in Astro, and who will return all the love in his heart, and are willing to polish this diamond in the rough, into the gem that he is. We encourage any adopter to learn about training a deaf dog and the special attention they require. If you are interested in meeting Astro, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire (online form or download a hard copy), which is the first step of our pre-adoption process. At our website (hittgv.org), please click on the Adopt tab near the top of the page, and scroll down to find the online Adoption Form. You can also email us at doghouse@hittgv.org if you have specific questions about Astro or our process. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-08-09-00611Zoey (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Zoey is a beautiful Australian/Border Collie mix. Zoey has lots of energy, is fully house trained, loves to play, likes other dogs and is very loving. She unfortunately has an issue with 'resource guarding her food'. Recently she bit our 28year old son who tried to take away her food. They are planning on having children so sadly, they cannot keep her. Zoey would be a great dog for an 'adult only' family who would be happy giving her lots of exercise. Zoey would also thrive on a farm as a working dog. She is approx 65 lbs and is very sweet. She loves to cuddle and will follow you everywhere:)

Backstory: Happy and his life long companion, a Beagle, both seniors were dumped at a shelter in LA county by their owners. A rescue came and took the Beagle, leaving Happy behind. We were told of this story and rescued him. Happy has been in foster care for 3 months and he still has moments where he looks very sad, still missing his best friend. Happy is great with humans and other dogs. he is NOT good with cats or small farm animals. Happy is a very affectionate and loving boy............unless you tell him to do something. He was apparently the alpha in his last home and took orders from nobody. His current foster has made ... (Read More)progress with him but feels somebody more assertive would be the best thing for him. We do have a trainer avaiable by phone to help with this issue, which is very fixable with a confident human alpha. When we first got Happy, he was so filthy and matted that he had to be shaved down but his coat has since grown out beautifully. He is a senior boy that deserves a warm bed and a loving home to spend his golden years. If you are interested in this boy, please fill out our adoption application: http://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application Happy's adoption fee is 150 and all fees are used for future rescue efforts. PIease Read Before Adopting an Australian Shepherd in California
Australian Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Shepherd, or Aussie, is a playful breed that provides excellent companionship to active children. Aussies are smart, trainable, protective, and eager to please. Australian Shepherds are gentle with humans and aggressive when herding farm animals. Aussies are active even when indoors and do best with plenty of exercise in a large yard.

lnteresting Australian Shepherd Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Shepherds are not Australian; they were developed in the United States for herding livestock on American ranches. Australian Shepherds are descended from Spanish dogs that were used for herding Merino sheep. Aussies are often used by police for narcotics detection. Some Australian Shepherds are prized for their beautiful merle coloring, but the gene that causes this coloring also results in deafness or blindness.
